Ukraine in Histories and Stories: Essays by Ukrainian intellectuals (Ibidem Press/Ibidem-Verlag 2020)

Free online version

The last few years have brought so many surprises about from Ukrainians. Surprised by their unity and anarchy, their strength to fight, their differences from Russians, their long history, and their complicated modernity. This book, published two years before the war, gives some insights into understanding what has created the modern Ukrainian nation, and why it surprised the world.

Comprising essays from Ukrainian intellectuals, writers, historians, security and cultural experts, and philosophers, it leaves a nice after-taste that causes a desire to read further.

War in 140 Characters. How Social Media Is Reshaping Conflict in the Twenty-First Century (Basic Books, 2017) by David Patrikarakos

Ukraine and Israel are in the news in parallel. Patrikarakos spent significant time covering wars in Ukraine and in the Middle East, but in this book, he unpacks the role of the social networks that changed our perception of warfare.

He draws examples from the two regions and describes the initial stage of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Those stories allow the reader to see how narratives have been created, and allow a more critical understanding of the “news” we get these days from the social networks.

Future War and the Defence of Europe (Oxford University Press, 2021) by John R. Allen, Frederick Ben Hodges, Julian Lindley-French,

An outstanding view from two sides of the Atlantic towards war and peace in Europe. The book was triggered by evolving risks and threats, initial lessons from the NATO response, and the changing nature of warfare since Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began. Published on the eve of the current war, it gives a strategic vision of those aspects of Transatlantic relations that impact European defense.
