The Black Sea region, which is of strategic importance for transatlantic security, has become an arena of great power competition. Russia's increased militarization of Crimea and eastern Ukraine, along with Moscow’s naval provocations are threatening NATO’s strategic posture and that of its allies. The pandemic has exacerbated these long standing security threats with border closures limiting the movement of citizens and personnel. As elsewhere, covid-19 is impacting Romania’s foreign policy priorities in the Black Sea region as well as the broader alliance structure.
