And the explosions followed. Ukraine is now fighting a multi-axis war against an invading army estimated at around 200,000 personnel.
The invasion was announced by a wave of cruise and ballistic missile strikes, with targets hit in Kyiv, and cities across the country. Military and communications installations were a major target, as were airfields like Hostomel air base, 10 miles northwest of Kyiv, where Russian helicopters were seen leading an airborne assault. Russian armor and troops were reported to be following in behind from the north, south, and east, with Ukrainian forces providing fierce resistance. Unverified social media footage showed burning Russian armored vehicles, corpses and prisoners.
Citing “multiple bloody crimes against civilians” committed by a “junta,” President Vladimir Putin said he had authorized a “special military operation” to “demilitarize and de-nazify Ukraine,” while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released messages calling on, “everyone who has combat experience and can join the defense of Ukraine. President Biden said: “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way.”
