One year on from Russia and China’s proclamation of a “No Limits Partnership”, what has the relationship achieved?
Event Overview
The war in Ukraine has simultaneously strained and strengthened Russia’s relationship with China. While China remains generally silent about Russia’s aggression, Beijing has increased economic assistance to Moscow to mitigate the effects of Western sanctions. President Putin and Chairman Xi reaffirmed their “strong mutual support” during the 2022 Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan, underscoring their “no limits partnership.” Some observers, however, believe Xi is tiring of the costs that Putin’s war is imposing on China’s economy and reputation. What is the current state of the Sino-Russian relationship, and what we can expect in the months and years ahead?
