Russia’s military capabilities represent a growing threat to U.S. allies in Central Europe. In both Syria and Ukraine, Moscow has demonstrated that its forces can achieve swift operational success on the modern battlefield. This threatens frontline states like Poland with the evolving dilemma of whether to focus on domestic defense or rely on out-of-area support from U.S. and NATO allies in the event of a future national security crisis.
For Poland and other U.S. allies, the perils of the modern security environment urgently demand new forms of deterrence. But can these come soon enough—and if so, how?
