John L. Gronski, Major General, U.S. Army (Retired) is a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Transatlantic Leadership Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis. He served for over 40 years in the United States Army on active duty and in the Pennsylvania National. John is also a Senior Mentor – Highly Qualified Expert for the U.S. Army Mission Command Training Program, and President of Leader Grove Consulting, LLC. His most recent operational assignments in the U.S. Army include serving as United States Army Europe, Deputy Commanding General, Army National Guard from May 2016 to April 2019 assisting the Commanding General in leading over 30,000 Soldiers. He commanded the 28th Infantry Division, leading 15,000 Soldiers from 2012 to 2016. John was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in 2005 and 2006 as a brigade commander leading a force of over 5,400 U.S. service members and 5,000 Iraqi Soldiers during combat operations. He deployed to the central region of Europe between 2002 and 2003 as a brigade commander leading a force of approximately 2,000 Soldiers.
In 2000 John was assigned for one year as the Military Liaison Team Chief in the Republic of Lithuania. He has visited and worked with military leaders and U.S. and multinational Soldiers in Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, as well as many countries in the Balkans.
His military education and training includes the U.S. Army War College, the Senior Executive in National and International Security Course at The Kennedy School Harvard University, Army Strategic Education Program Advanced Course 18-02, Command and General Staff Course, Dual Status Commander Course, Infantry Officer Advance Course, Ranger Course, Airborne Course, Winter Mountaineering Course, Air Ground Operations School, and the Master Fitness Trainer Course.
Significant military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation (2nd Award), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star), Iraq Campaign Medal (with 2 Bronze Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Basic Parachutist Badge.
Other achievements include the AUSA Lieutenant General Raymond S. McLain Medal, awarded to a serving or former member of the United States National Guard who have contributed most to the advancement of the Association’s goal of a seamless and component-integrated Army, presented October 2019; the Cross of the Knight of the Order for Merits to Lithuania for active promotion of military cooperation between Lithuania and the United States of America, awarded February 2019; the Golden Polish Army Medal for promoting the history and traditions of the Polish Army outside of Poland, presented August 2019; and the National Infantry Association Order of Saint Maurice in the rank of Primicerius awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the Infantry, awarded August 2011.
John holds a Master of Business Administration from Penn State University, a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from the University of Scranton.
