From Russia’s war in Ukraine to COVID-19, Russia and China have exploited crises for geopolitical gains. With a new approach, the "infodemic" fight can be won.

From Russia’s war in Ukraine to the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia and China have exploited crises for geopolitical gains. Both countries have leveraged their state-run media operations to distract public opinion, to undermine confidence in the competence and integrity of public authorities, and to accumulate political and diplomatic capital. The resulting “infodemic” left the public vulnerable to disinformation and revealed that the West can still be caught flatfooted. But with a new approach, this fight can be won.
