Washington, DC, July 18, 2022 – Today, the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) is pleased to announce Dr. Sam Greene as its new Director for Democratic Resilience, where he will lead the organization’s work on countering authoritarian threats, most notably from Russia and China, and advancing transatlantic democratic unity.

Prior to joining CEPA, Dr. Greene headed the Russia Institute at King’s College London, where he will continue to hold an affiliation as Professor of Russian politics. Previously, he worked in Moscow for 13 years as Director of the Centre for the Study of New Media and Society at the New Economic School and as Deputy Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center. Dr. Greene is an esteemed author on Russian politics and foreign policy. His recent publications include Putin v the People: The Perilous Politics of a Divided Russia (Yale, 2019) and Moscow in Movement: Power & Politics in Putin's Russia (Stanford, 2014)

On Dr. Greene’s arrival, CEPA President and CEO Dr. Alina Polyakova commented: “I am thrilled to welcome Sam to lead CEPA’s work on democratic resilience at a time when democracy is under attack, especially in Ukraine that is fighting for our democratic future. Sam brings a wealth of expertise to CEPA and I look forward to the invaluable contributions he will make as a part of our team.”

Dr. Greene said: “I am immensely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to join CEPA in this endeavor.” He added: “It is more important than ever to renew the transatlantic commitment to democratic values and principles. Doing this will require hard-nosed analysis of the reasons why democracies are under threat, whether from external or internal sources, and turning that analysis into real policy solutions. I am convinced that there is no more important endeavor and no community of thinkers better suited to the task.”

Dr. Greene will be based at CEPA’s headquarters in Washington, DC. For media inquiries, please contact press@cepa.org.
