In his latest essay for The American Interest, Jakub Grygiel examines how much should the U.S. rely on its overseas allies to contain distant threats by looking back to 5th century BC Camarina. As Grygiel writes, "It is natural to expect that a state will seek to protect itself against a nearby rival—that is, against a power that has the intention and the capacity to extend its influence and control over its neighborhood...But reality is more complicated."
